Here is David, speaking dog with a canine student :)
You might be wondering why the Big, Bad Wolf is howling
away on my home page (technically, it is a wolf hybrid, but I
digress :).  Let me explain.  In my work with and study of all
things canine, I have become aware of a dog's need for its basic
instinctual necessities to be fulfilled so that balance can occur in
its life.  Because of this, my training philosophy is all about
helping dogs move back toward their ancestral roots so that
they can achieve a nature-based equilibrium.  Please understand
that it is NOT my desire to make your pet into a ravenous wolf,
nor could I do that, even if I wanted, because of the level of
domestication of today's companion animals.  I instead want to
teach you how to see life and other things like your dog sees
them, so that you can help your dog become a stable pet that is
easy to manage, love, and enjoy.

The process of obtaining balance for your dog can be done in
very gentle and positive ways.  Though many trainers resort to
techniques such as the Alpha Roll (pinning a disobedient dog to
the ground) to make a dog behave, this is not a default technique
for me as I do not find it necessary to resort to such methods to
get a dog to obey me or behave around me.  I do feel that
establishing the Alpha ROLE is very important, and there are
times when holding a dog in its place with a calm and gentle
touch are necessary, because this is what the dog knows from a
genetic standpoint.  The Alpha Roll has gained the bad press that
it has because of how many trainers apply it too often as well as
improperly, causing the dog to be traumatized, which leads to
no respect or trust for the trainer.  This creates a vicious cycle
as a dog that does not respect or trust a person will, often, not
obey them, leading to further improper use of the Alpha Roll and
other forceful techniques.  Overall, I am confident that training
can be done in a way that does not require extreme physical
touch or other interventions that can be traumatic to your dog.

I will not use this particular forum to outline or expound upon
the intricacies of what I have discussed above, but will save that
for our training sessions.  However, if you have questions about
what I have shared here or about other issues related to dog
training, please feel free to email me at one of the following
